چکیده

The equilibrium shape and chemical potential of an array of island ridges in an epitaxially strained solid film are determined from a continuum model describing the Stranski–Krastonow morphology of a thin layer on a substrate. This model incorporates the conditions for mechanical and chemical equilibrium, isotropic surface energy, and misfit strain. Solutions corresponding to periodic arrays of island ridges separated by wetting layers are found in the limit of island height much less than the island width. Our results describe how the island width, shape, and chemical potential vary as the distance between the ridges varies. The scaled island shape is shown to remain relatively constant as the distance between the islands increases. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~99!00722-7#

Equilibrium Shapes of Small Three-dimensional Stranski-krastanow Islands in Epitaxially-strained Solid Lms

We determine the equilibrium morphology of a strained solid lm for the case where it wets the substrate (Stranski-Krastanow growth). Using a continuum elasticity model with isotropic surface energy and equal elastic constants in the lm and substrate, we calculate an asymptotic solution for the axisymmetric three-dimensional equilibrium shape of a small island, where the height is much less than...

Stable unidimensional arrays of coherent strained islands

We investigate the equilibrium properties of arrays of coherent strained islands in heteroepitaxial thin films of bidimensional materials. The model we use takes into account only three essential ingredients : surface energies, elastic energies of the film and of the substrate and interaction energies between islands via the substrate. Using numerical simulations for a simple Lennard-Jones soli...

Stability of Nanostructures on Surfaces

Self-assembly of ordered structures, a few nanometers wide, has been observed on many interfaces critical to new nanotechnologies. They are thought to arise because of a delicate balance between long-range strain field interactions and short-range chemical forces that stabilizes these structures. However, a detailed understanding of the driving forces does not exist. In this article, I will sho...

Theory of equilibrium shape of an anisotropically strained island: Thermodynamic limits for growth of nanowires

Using continuum elastic theory, we show that strain anisotropy removes the shape instability existing for an isotropically strained island. An anistropically strained island has always an anisotropic shape, elongating along the less-strained direction and adopting a narrow width in the more-strained direction. The sign of strain makes only a quantitative difference without changing the qualitat...

Dislocation Structures of Submonolayer Films near the Commensurate-Incommensurate Phase Transition: Ag on Pt(111)

Submonolayer films of Ag on Pt(111) exhibit parallel partial dislocations separated by narrow hcp domains and much wider fcc domains, the large difference in width being atypical of strained metal overlayers on close-packed substrates. Using a two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model, we calculate the relative domain widths. We examine possible effects of dislocations on equilibrium island shape...
